Feedback
I love feedback. I thrive on it. Don't be afraid of giving it. You don't have to be a vidder to do so, trust me.
Downloading/Watching Information
a) You're going to need a divx codec to play this, and a lot of other vids. Go to divx.com to download. It's free, it's fast, it doesn't take long to set up. If your enjoy songvids, it's worth the extra effort.
b) Quality is directly related to size.
Vid
I deemed it experimental in the details above (scroll up), and it really was for me. It's straight from my mind, so I'm sure a lot of things that I was thinking while creating it didn't come across, which is why a commentary would be so USEFUL right now for you. Sadly, the idea of a full commentary breaks my mind, and I haven't been doing them lately.
I can sum up a few things though. This is an alternate universe video. By "alternative universe," I mean it diverges from canon wildly. If you can't visually separate yourself from a clip's true context, you're not going to like it very much. Seriously.
My AU:
a) Sam has gone off, leaving Dean a bit brokenhearted, and this is his revenge. On Sam's new girl. On Sam. b) Dean's being chased by the cops, which Sam has sicked on him, but that's not a huge plot point.
The summary actually does pretty much sum up this video, even if it is pretty complicated in my head.
Why:
This is a video for every gal pal of mine that has wanted to beat the crap out of their ex-boyfriend's, but refrained, because actually, they're not quite this psychotic. Um, also, Dean canon-ically was pretty fucked up about Sam leaving "running away" for college. And I guess I wanted to give him an outlet for that.
"Me, I know I'm a freak. And sooner or later everybody's gonna leave me." - Dean, "Skin"
And I sort of have a thing for darkening my characters up. I once made a weird and creepy Sam/Daniel SG-1 vid. I'll probably never ever even watch it again, because it is THAT bad, but... well, it had heart. Creepy-dark-needs-therapy-now... heart. It'd be kind of fun to re-make it actually.
Something You Might Not Get:
Something to note, in this AU vid, the shots of Rebecca are actually Jessica---that's why I tried not to use clear shots of Rebbecca's face. She's blonde, Jessica's blonde, hair style isn't a HUGE issue, and when Rebbecca's tied down, it's a NON-issue, because it looks curly...ish. Crimped, maybe. Okay, I'm reaching. I reached a lot with this video. I'm actually a little nervous about reactions.
Excuses, Excuses:
I only had two episodes worth of footage to work with for "Freak", but I desperately wanted to fool with a Sam/Dean-ish vid, so I let myself fool around, and a video actually came out of it.
ETA: Looking back, this is a very messy video, but it taught me quite a few things all on its own, which is why I leave a copy of it floating around. Some may like it, others may hate it, it is what it is (I've made my peace, vid, now be free!)

This vid was FANTASTIC!
I love love LOVE anyone who can do constructed reality well, and this was done just perfectly!
I know when you make a vid it's kinda hard to distance yourself from it enough to figure out if what you're doing will make sense to people watching it (I know I have that problem a lot anyway), but this vid completely made sense to me (well, a fucked up AU kind of sense ;-)) even before reading your commentary.
I got the whole Rebecca/Jess thing and I loved the whole Dark!Dean angle you were going for.
Really solid vid, nice editing job, and great attention to the beats. I absolutely loved it!
And YAY for the first Wincest vid! I tell ya, if loving the Wincest is wrong, then I don't want to be right ;-)
2005-10-29 04:32 am (UTC)
Yeah, absolutely. I've been tempted to get a vid beta, or try to tempt one to me, I should say. But---I don't know. It's weird, but vidding is this intensely personal, devoted experience for me now. It wasn't always. And I know it would be useful to have someone with clear eyes take a look at my video and say, "yes to this, no to this, and what the hell is that?" --- but I don't think I'm quite there yet as a vidder. Hopefully I will be one day.
I got the whole Rebecca/Jess thing and I loved the whole Dark!Dean angle you were going for.
I'm glad that you were able to take the Rebecca clips out of the context they were given to us in. A part of me was tempted to just say Sam was being a sleeze with EVERYONE, but even in an AU... well, that's just not good characterization. And I totally believe a vid can have 'characterization'.
And YAY for the first Wincest vid! I tell ya, if loving the Wincest is wrong, then I don't want to be right ;-)
Hee! Brothers seem to be a pattern for me. A very public, shameful problem. /whimper/
By the way, I have seen your vid, and have LOVED it. I'm putting together some in depth feedback, but it always takes me forever to get my brain around a vid I enjoyed and point out exactly why. Yeah. I'm one of THOSE feedback...ers.

Also, the relationship you were showing us between the guys was extremely intense, and very, very clear. Wow.
(I do remember thinking that *if* you were so motivated to trim down the song a bit, that the vid could have been compacted a bit without suffering, but it certainly didn't feel too long; it was just a thought that occurred to me near the end.)
2005-10-29 04:37 am (UTC)
And yeah, I did some trimming on the song, but I can see what you mean. I'm tempted to go back, and trim out one chorus (the one after "every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back"). If I do, then I'll put up a more perm version probably.
Thanks for the feedback! :)

Yeah. I did it. And no one ended up too hurt.

But I'll try, I will.
This vid was just amazing. Fabgasmic. I'm so glad I checked my LJ this morning because I got to watch this wonderful vid.
... It seriously rocked. :D (Now you can insert all the "OMG!!!!!!!"s xD .. )
2005-10-29 04:40 am (UTC)
And I certainly like being described as 'fabgasmic'. Or well. Something I did being described that way.

I'm so glad you took a chance and watched it. Honestly, I thought I'd get a few wandering over, and shaking their head at the girl who shouldn't EVER be allowed to listen to music while fangirling.
Thank you for the feedback.

(this is a threat, you realize, Supernatural has kind of taken the place of a few fandoms in my heart)
Thank you for the feedback. Alanis is actually quite convincing in this song, I've always thought. I enjoyed her, before she became well adjusted.

See, YES. He's a little (a lot) psychotic certainly. But stuff like this just happens when you break up with psychotic guys. Um. Not that I'm condoning.
*searches for a rephrase button*
Er, nevermind. Anyway, thank you so much for giving it a chance, and taking the time to respond.

I... I will never watch the show the same way again.
Which... is a good thing because I? LOVED this!! ^_^
I should probably admit right away though that I didn't read your notes before hand *g*. I just saw that it was a Supernatural vid, skimmed through things enough to find the link, starting downloading and went on with other things (*slaps self* Bad, Brosy! Bad!). After watching it though I rushed right back here. Not, however, because I was confused/needed clarification but because I wanted to fangirl myself all over some feedback =P. Seriously, I thought you did SUCH an amazing job illustrating this AU version of things. I was totally able to put aside my knowledge of the footage's actual context and apply it to the story you had set up. And was blown away by how dark (and, oddly enough, sexy) you were able to make it. Especially with the song choice which, holy crap, it turns out is thee PERFECT fit! I mean, the only "complaint" I could possibly have is that some parts are, literally, so dark that it's hard to make out what's being shown but, seeing as how that just's the ways things are lit/shot on the show, the fault lies nowhere near you. Besides, all that meant was that I had to watch it a few times before I got the full grasp of it all and, yeah, like that was a real chore ;P.
Anyway, the bottom line is that this is definitely a "keeper" and I'm really looking forward to your next vid! :)

Er, I mean. Hmm.
Seriously, I thought you did SUCH an amazing job illustrating this AU version of things. I was totally able to put aside my knowledge of the footage's actual context and apply it to the story you had set up.
I'm so relieved that everything seems to have gotten through. I mean... it's an AU. So it was a little nerve wracking to actually post it. Nearly didn't. I love that you were able to put aside the context, because that's the truest struggle of an AU vid. It can be as pretty as you like, but if the audience is still seeing what really went on? No go. I mean---in this one, some application of true context was involved. Dean really feels he's a freak, deep down, and he really has issues with Sam running off. I think that might have played a part in people getting it. We want to see those issues dealt with. Maybe not like this... but something.
And was blown away by how dark (and, oddly enough, sexy) you were able to make it.
All them, trust me. As much as I enjoy the Wincest, occasionally I'm annoyed by all the eye fucking. How am I supposed to focus on things like plot? Or actually believe they're brothers? If they'd stop eye fucking, I'd stop with the Wincest, I swear. :D
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I'm horrible at RESPONDING to responses, but feedback is always very dear to me. I'm just never good at expressing that.

Okay, wow, I loved this AU idea, it was just gorgeously executed. I love this song and I just thought it fit so well. You have a talent for matching scenes with the music. In all your videos. And the pacing is always top notch. Quality is always excellent when I view it. That's a thing of mine, I can't stand bad quality vids.
Damn. It all just fit so well. Dean being jealous and attacking Jess, the revenge. Haha oh man I fucking loved this so much. I'll be re-watching this about a bagillion times.
I can't decide which I'd rather you do more of--vidding or writing. Both are like crack to me.
2005-10-29 05:03 am (UTC)
Or maybe we are the same person after all, and then doing a Britney would just bring the idea to a whole nother level of self-promoting.
You have a talent for matching scenes with the music. In all your videos. And the pacing is always top notch.
Thank you! I have concerns, sometimes, that my slower-cut videos just bore people, but I'm glad to see that's not always the case. :) And quality IS an important issue. I learned that the hard way. Starting out, I had very limited source. Some of the videos I made! ::winces::
I can't decide which I'd rather you do more of--vidding or writing. Both are like crack to me.
If I was a cat right now, I'd be purring. Seriously. That's like... all my sweet spots right there.

I've never used rapidshare before, but I'll try to put it up tonight.
Also, Download Accelerator is a great way to resume downloads after they've timed out. And I think YouSendIt has some kind of special free software for that type of thing, but I could be wrong, and it might be more trouble than it's worth.

Secondly, I've just recently fallen into this Supernatural obsession (thanks a lot, Jared!), and I've come from the vast Canadian Idol slash fandom. Basically, I'd forgotten that slash could be presented in video form because we never do it.
So needless to say, this was brilliant. Thank you!
2005-10-29 05:08 am (UTC)
don't really get the show in Canada unless you have satellite, so I've been gushing to my friends about it and they're clueless. I may just have to show them this!
I hope you're friends are okay with Wincest, then. More and more people seem to be stricken (in a good way!) by the Wincest fire daily.
:) I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
2005-10-26 04:33 pm (UTC)
Brilliant vid. Oh Dean!
2005-10-29 05:12 am (UTC)
Not dumb at all! I've been working with color a lot in my vids lately. In fact, probably too much. In this one, I did an RBG swab, removing some of the red, and a color overlay of a very gentle blue that never the less turned most of the night scenes REALLY blue, upped the contrast, and... did something to the gamma. I wrote it down somewhere. I'm glad you noticed! Seriously. It's the small things like that which totally make my day. :)

Review - Vid: Freak
2005-10-27 06:07 pm (UTC)
Hmm, as for criticism... During the line I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner (also don't know time for that one, but it's the line right before the one I previously mentioned, near the middle of the song), the scene choice was a little odd; but that may have been just me, and it's just a little nitpicking.
Re: Review - Vid: Freak
2005-11-03 04:38 am (UTC)
No, no, I agree. It made sense at the time, but looking at it a million times, now it fees like filler. I *hate* filler. Well, no, I have nothing against it---but I like having a reason for each clip, even if the reason of it is to BE filler---and I can't remember why I used that there anymore. *wracks brain while looking for notebook*
Before I go pick my brain, I want to say thank you for the feedback. I've been consistently surprised by what people notice about this video. Thank you.

That's totally understandable. It was a reach, that's for sure.
Song choice was appropriate and the scenes were edited well. They flowed very nicely - no choppiness.
Yay! Song choice kind of worried me. It always does, but it did more so in this case. Dean is really classic rock, or maybe harder alternative rock, and Alanis is... I love her, but I wouldn't call her rock. She's Indie/New Age/Pop.

(BTW, if you re-do Lost Art and make it even better? You will likely break me into a million eensy pieces, as it is already The Great Don and Charlie Vid of my heart. So you know.)

He can't help it.
(BTW, if you re-do Lost Art and make it even better? You will likely break me into a million eensy pieces, as it is already The Great Don and Charlie Vid of my heart. So you know.)
Yay! Double feedback. Always a special treat. See, I re-watched Lost Art againt this week to go back to the drawing board, and I don't hate it as much as I did the week before, and a month before that I adored it. I think it could definitely benefit from some tighter editing throughout, and maybe a few changes in clips. Just some overall adjustments, but I like the... feel of it, honestly.
Is that bad to say about your own vid? Hmph. I'll have to check the netiquette of that.
Anyway, I want it to be the same vid, but to run more smoothly with the beat. It was my first attempt at true beat-editing, so I'll cut myself a *little* slack. I'm glad you like it. I think I prefer 'disease' of my D/C vids, but I'm not sure. I haven't been able to re-watch it because it's currently on a computer that hasn't been set back up since my move.
